When and where is my interview?
USCIS will send you a notice in the mail telling you when and where you must appear for your interview. Your interview will be held at your local USCIS office.
What do I need to bring to my interview?
- Your Permanent Resident Card
- Your passport, even if it is expired
- Any Reentry Permits you may have.
The USCIS may ask you to bring additional documents and list the required documents on your appointment letter.
What does the interview consist of?
You will be asked to answer questions about your application. Remember you are under oath, so any false statements may be considered lack of "good moral character."
The English test will consist of the following:
- Reading: you may be asked to read out loud parts of the N-400, read a set of civics questions and answer them, and read several simple sentences.
- Writing: the officer will ask you to write one or two simple sentences.
- Oral: USCIS will be testing your speaking ability when you answer questions about yourself or your application, or civics and government.
You will receive a decision. The agent may grant your application, deny your application, or choose to continue your application.
How many attempts do I get to pass the citizenship interview?
If you fail the exam, you get a second attempt. If you fail the second time, you must submit a new application including the fee.
If I fail the interview once, how long does my case stay open for the second try?
USCIS will give you the next appointment date. If you cannot make it to that second appointment, you must send USCIS a copy of your N-445 along with a letter explaining why you cannot make it to your appointment. You will then receive a new appointment date.
What if I cannot go to my scheduled interview?
It is very important not to miss your interview. If you have to miss your interview, you should write to the USCIS office where your interview is to be conducted as soon as possible and ask to have your interview rescheduled. Rescheduling an interview may add several months to the naturalization process, so make all attempts to attend your original interview date.
If you miss your scheduled interview without notifying USCIS, they will administratively close your case. If they close your case because you missed your interview, they will notify you through mail. Unless you contact them to schedule a new interview within 1 year after your case is closed, they will deny your application.
